Not to be confused with the Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912) was indeed named after the poet, the hyphen in his name arising as the result of a printer’s error. The son of an Englishwoman and a doctor from Sierra Leone, he was one of the first black composers to gain international recognition, displaying aptitude for music at an early age and studying at the Royal College of Music. During three tours of America, he was nicknamed “The African Mahler” by the New York press. He died of pneumonia.
