About Sam Bettens

Sam Bettens (Kapellen, September 23, 1972 as Sarah Bettens) is a Belgian singer and musician, best known for K’s Choice.

In the early 1990s, Bettens played with brother Gert in an amateur band, ‘The Basement Plugs’.
Under the name ‘The Choice’, they released their debut album in 1993. In the same year, Bettens recorded two singles under the stage name Sara Beth: “I’m so lonesome I could cry” (a cover of Hank Williams Sr.) and “Why don’t you try me” (a duet with Frankie Miller). Both songs reached the top 10 of the Flemish charts.

After The Choice changed its name to ‘K’s Choice’, the band broke through with the album “Paradise in Me” and the hit “Not an Addict”. This was followed by several more studio albums and hits.

In 1999, the band had a guest appearance on the series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” season 3 episode 16.

When K’s Choice decided to take a year off in 2003, Bettens set to work on a solo album. First the mini album “Go” was released, and in March 2005 the full album “Scream” was released, which included the singles “Not insane” and “Stay”. In 2005 Bettens also wrote a Dutch-language song for the first time, entitled “Leef”, which also became the title song of the film of the same name, “Leef!”. On January 23, 2006, a duet by Bettens and Stash was released on a single titled “I Need a Woman”.

In December 2006, Bettens toured Flanders with Tom Kestens with the theatrical tour “From Scream to Whisper”. In 21 days, they gave 17 sold-out concerts.

Bettens' new album, titled “Shine”, should have been released on September 28, 2007. However, the Flemish newspaper De Morgen, in collaboration with Universal Music, decided to give the album free in 120,000 copies with the newspaper on October 13, 2007. This promotion proved a success and the newspaper had to be reprinted 60,000 more times. The Belgian store edition of “Shine” included six additional live tracks recorded during a showcase at the KVS. Two promo singles were released from “Shine”: “Daddy’s gun” and “I can’t get out”.

In 2007, Bettens won a European Border Breakers Award, a prize for promising artists debuting abroad.

In 2008, Bettens was a guest singer on BLØF’s album “Oktober”. At the end of that year, Bettens toured Western Europe with the theater tour “Never say goodbye”. The singer performed only acoustic songs, including covers of Stevie Wonder (“Don’t you worry ‘bout a thing”).

Bettens could be heard on the album “Kingdom of Contradiction” by the Dutch band Intwine, with a cover of “Walking on the Moon” by The Police.

In 2020, Bettens competed on the Belgian vresion of the TV show “The Masked Singer”, disguised as Otter. Bettens was unmasked in the third episode.

Bettens started a new adventure in 2018 with fellow musicians Reinout Swinnen (keyboardist of K’s Choice) and Wim Van der Westenthe (drummer of K’s Choice) and formed the electronic music group ‘Rex Rebel’. The band released its debut single “Big Shot” on October 21, 2019, and the full-length debut album “Run” on February 28, 2020.

In December 2022, K’s choice released the single “Time Is A Parasite”. Bettens was a guest on the television program ‘Het Huis’, aired January 9, 2023.

Bettens' autobiography “Ik Ben” was published in March 2023.
