GS9 member and long time friend with Bobby Shmurda, Chad Marshall (born November 24, 1991), better known under his stage name Rowdy Rebel, is an American rapper from East Flatbush, Brooklyn.
Growing up in East Flatbush, people in his neighborhood refereed to him as “rowdy” as a child, which is the genesis for his stage name.
He began rapping at the age of 5 but didn’t take it seriously until age 11. Rowdy and Bobby both achieved fame in 2014, thanks to the rise of Bobby Shmurda with his single Hot Nigga, peaking at number 6 on the Billboard 100. In July 2014, just two weeks after Shmurda had signed a deal with Epic Records, Rowdy had gone on to sign a deal with them as well. Rowdy achieved success with him being on the remix to “Hot Nigga,” as well as his single “Computers,” which also features Bobby Shmurda.
On December 17, 2014, Marshall was arrested by the NYPD for conspiracy, attempted murder, attempted assault, reckless endangerment and criminal possession of a weapon. Bobby, Rowdy, and 13 associated GS9 members were also arrested for various charges including drug dealing and conspiracy to murder. He later pleaded guilty in exchange for a deal that sentenced him to 6–7 years in prison, thanks to Bobby Shmurda. Due to his time served awaiting his trial, Rowdy was given almost two years of time served. Rowdy had a parole hearing on August 2020, which led to his approval of his release in December 2020. Rowdy was later released on December 15, 2020. Following his release, fellow rapper Young Thug had awarded the rapper a YSL chain.
In June of 2020, while Rowdy was still serving his sentence, he had been featured in the late Pop Smoke’s track, “Make It Rain,” making this his first ever music release in three years. It debuted at #51 on the Billboard Hot 100, making this his first charted single.
Following his release from prison, Rowdy announced on Complex, in an interview, that he was planning on releasing music straight away, however his team convinced him to work more on a forthcoming full-length project, which is expected to come in 2021. He had also stated that he was still signed to Epic Records. On January 22, 2021, Rowdy released the single, [“Re Route,”]
