About RHEMA (Pop-Rock)

RHEMA (Rebel Heretics Electronic Music Alliance) was a band active during the late ‘70s/early '80s, best known for their appearance in the 1984 film Voyage of the Rock Aliens. The group consisted of Marc Jackson (guitar, keyboards, lead and backing vocals), Jeffrey Casey (drums, backing vocals), Gregory Bond (lead and backing vocals), Pat Byrnes (guitar, backing vocals), Bobby Freeman (bass, backing vocals) and Craig Jensen (keyboards, backing vocals).

RHEMA was founded by Marc Jackson and Huron Claus, who first collaborated during their time at a Christian high school in Arizona. Together with vocalist Gregory Bond, they laid the foundation for the band. As RHEMA began to shed its Christian roots however, Claus parted ways with the group, making room for Casey, Jensen, Byrnes and Freeman. RHEMA’s transition from Christian music to new wave/pop-rock was spurred by the influence of producer Dennis Alexander. Under his guidance, the band sported a new image, heavily inspired by the likes of Devo.

In 1983, the newly reinvented RHEMA caught the attention of Curb Records, who invited them to record an album and star in the musical comedy Voyage of the Rock Aliens as the titular extraterrestrial rockers – minus bassist Bobby Freeman, who failed his screen test.
Unfortunately, distribution issues plagued the film, delaying its release until 1988. While the film was a success in Germany and would eventually achieve cult status, it did very little to further RHEMA’s career. This setback led to the band being dropped from the label before their album could fully materialize.

RHEMA’s tracks “Combine Man,” “Get Out & Dance,” “That’s Life” and “21st Century” found their way into the film, with “Combine Man” and “21st Century” both receiving official music videos. Despite having multiple songs featured in the film, only “21st Century” was included on the film’s soundtrack, making it their sole release on a major label.
In the early 2000s, the latter three tracks, along with alternate versions of “21st Century” would be shared by the members online. These releases alongside other unreleased demos and remixes were bundled into the collection The Rock Aliens (also known as RHEMA’s Greatest Non-Hits!).

In the 2010s, Marc Jackson and Jeffrey Casey reunited to revive RHEMA. They release their first full-length album in 2017, Shine. Following this successful comeback, the duo released a series of singles. There has been discussion of further releases and potential collaborations with former band-mates, though nothing has materialized from these discussions yet.
