Born Reinhold Ernest Glier in Kiev to a German woodwind instrument maker, Reinhold Glière (1874-1956) changed his name so that Russians would find it easier to pronounce. He moved up quickly through the Moscow Conservatory, composing in all musical genres in a traditional manner that pleased his Soviet masters when they came into power. They awarded him numerous prizes for his work.
