Growing up, Ramey wanted to be a rapper and found that the act of writing and rapping provided a creative outlet for him. He was passionate about rap and music not just from a listener’s perspective, but also as a creator. Since he was ten years old, he had been writing songs in notebooks and loved the storytelling nature of it.
Initially, Ramey worked full-time for a large company and was searching for a side hustle to supplement his income. His younger brother, Nico on the Beat, was recording music and uploading it on YouTube at the time and was doing well with it. Ramey understood that rapping would not mix well with his corporate job, so he chose to try his hand at producing instead. He began producing in December 2018 and rapidly discovered how much he liked the process of creating music and, more specifically, how much he enjoyed exploring the creative side of putting together a beat. Ramey began his education by watching YouTube tutorials on how to create beats.
Ramey moved into a home in 2019 and he was able to set up his own studio, which allowed him to meet and record with artists in person. He taught himself how to record artists as well. Growing up, Ramey was good friends Lil Yee’s cousin. One day when he showed his cousin a beat, he passed it on to Lil Yee who then called him to tell him he loved it and wanted to record a song to it.
Ramey grew up with a lot of kids from the Fillmore and Hunters Point neighborhoods of San Francisco, both areas with rich hip-hop history. Because of this, he had good connections in the local music scene. What launched him on to the bigger stage in northern CA was a song he produced called “Shining” by Lil Pete and Tec. After that, bigger artists started reaching out to him including Lil Bean, Lil Yee, Lil Pete and MBNel, as well as local talent like JoeMari, Berk, StunnaMan02 and Gunna Goes Global. In early 2021, through recording sessions that he hosted at his home studio, he began gaining popularity and recognition for writing lyrics for rappers. He started putting songs together from an executive producer standpoint rather than just a beat maker.
Ramey’s experience in business from his previous job helped him with connecting and networking with rappers, managers, labels, and others of the sort. In the Fall of 2021, he scored 3 records on Lil Bean’s album, “Care Package for the Streets,” and 7 songs on Lil Yee’s album,
“Unbreakable” which included a single featuring PnB Rock. Towards the tail-end of 2021, he started managing producers and helping them with their business, negotiating contracts, getting them exposure, and connecting them with other artists to work with.
The first style Ramey developed was a modern bay area/west coast sound which consisted of bouncy and fast paced beats. He started with this originally because he was influenced by and exposed to it from growing up in the Bay Area. Ramey eventually fell in love with melodic rap and pain music because he found that the melodic aspect adds in other elements of artistry that traditional rapping lacks. He believes that it allows the artist to convey emotion through the melody and sound of their voice in addition to the lyrics. He started to mostly focus on making these types of beats while still adding in elements of his roots from the Bay Area.
When creating beats, Ramey starts with the melodies first- whether that’s piano, guitar, or whatever melodic instrument he chooses and then moves onto the drums. Throughout the entire process, he thinks about how an artist will eventually use it- where the hook, intro, and verse go, and how an artist’s voice can fit into it. He aspires to evoke emotion for the listeners of his music through melodies, adding vocals in the background, or in cases where he can’t find a vocal that expresses the emotion he’s looking for, by adding his own voice to the beat.
When Ramey works directly with an artist, he will correct their melody and flow cadence, but let them take the lead on how they want to create the music. This is where the collaborative process kicks in, and he might write a section of the verse, hook, or even suggest changes to the way the artist is recording their verse. He points out that artists may know what they want to say but don’t know how to fit it into a rhyme scheme or with the right number of syllables, and that’s where he comes in to organize it for them.
Coupled with his lifelong love for music, Ramey’s younger brother, Nico on the Beat, was his inspiration to pursue music. He mentions that he was always told by others his whole life that everything was given to him and that he had earned nothing. Therefore, Ramey aims to prove to himself and others that this is not true by doing what he truly loves for a living.
Ramey hopes to release a couple compilation albums where he features a lot of the local CA artists that he works with. Eventually, his goal is to shift into a more managerial role by starting, owning, and operating his own record label. Ramey wants to be able to affect artists and producers in a positive way and help them achieve their dreams.
