A prominent teacher and writer, Rabanus Maurus (780?-856) was a Frankish Benedictine monk who became archbishop of Mainz and is venerated by both Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox Christians. He also composed a number of hymns that are still performed today as part of liturgical services.
