Quicksand is an American post-hardcore band from New York City, United States, founded in 1990. Walter Schreifels fronted the hardcore punk band Gorilla Biscuits where he’d started as both vocalist and guitarist, but brought on a vocalist to relieve him of that role.
Later, Schreifels began a new punk project, originally under the name Moondog, as an attempt at being both vocalist and guitarist again, and that evolved into a more post-hardcore sound that became Quicksand.
Their debut self-titled EP generated major label interest. Polydor released the band’s debut album Siip in 1993 as Quicksand toured across the US and overseas. The follow-up Manic Compression (1995), released by Island Records, reached #135 on the US Albums Chart as the band toured with The Offspring, but the record company expected bigger sales. Combined with internal conflicts, the band broke up that year.
Quicksand reunited in 1998, touring with Deftones, but an attempt to record a third album in 1999 was unsuccessful and the band split again. Schreifels formed Rival Schools. Guitarist Tom Capone formed Instruction. Bassist Sergio Vega filled in for Deftones member Chi Cheng, who eventually passed away leading to Vega filling his position.
In June 2012, the band reunited as the unannounced “special guest” on the fourth night of the Revelation Records 25th Anniversary Shows at The Glass House in Pomona, California. They continued playing shows over the next year and in January 2013 began their first North American tour in 15 years.
That same year, they began teasing new music, and in 2017 they released their long-awaited third album, Interiors. Guitarist Tom Capone’s ‘health issues’ led to an arrest during the band’s tour that year and his dismissal from the group. An EP, Triptych Continuum was released in 2018. Distant Populations followed in 2021.
