Born Queen Esther Marrow in 1941, she was first discovered by Duke Ellington. In the 1960s she became active in the Civil Rights Movement, and went on to perform in a variety of genres, including Soul, R&B, Jazz and Gospel.
She’s also associated with the touring group, the Harlem Gospel Singers.
