Phuong Dung, real name Nguyen Phan Phuong Dung, is a former South Vietnamese country singer, active between 1960-1968. Dung became famous at the age of 17 in 1962 after successfully performing the song “Sadness Sorrow” by Manh Phat and Hoai Linh, and was awarded the “Gold Award for Female Artists” in 1965. Dung has had almost 400 albums credited to her, and is considered to be one of the most influential South Vietnamese singers before 1975.
In 1968, Phuong Dung gave up her career for motherhood after marrying, and ultimately left Vietnam in 1974. Dung and her family settled in Australia in 1977, with her daughters soon following behind. Phuong Dung has had 8 children: 6 boys and 2 girls, with her daughter Phuong Vy working with Thuy Nga Productions, and her other daughter Hoang Ly working as a model.
Phuong Dung was given the title of “Con Nhạn Trắng Gò Công” by Kien Giang poet Hà Huy Hà.
