Peggy Gou is a Berlin-based South Korean DJ, record producer, and fashion designer.
Her real name is Kim Min-ji and she was born in Incheon, South Korea, on July 3, 1991. At age 14, her parents sent her to London, England to study English. She moved back to Korea when she was 18 years old, but six months later she returned to London to study fashion at the London College of Fashion. After graduating, she worked as the London correspondent editor for Harper’s Bazaar Korea, and then moved to Berlin, Germany.
Peggy started her DJ career back in 2009 in Korea where a friend of hers taught her how to play well not only on vinyls. Then she learned music production in 2013 by using Ableton and her first track Hungboo was ended in 2014. Back then the Korean DJ played around several clubs around London and Soho and made her name known for her mixing ability.
In 2016 she signed with the UK-based independent label Rekids making her debut with Art of War EP.
In 2017 started Peggy’s fame spreading: she made her debut at Boiler Room’s gig in New York City then at Berlin’s most exclusive nightclub Berghain. That year she played more than a hundred live gigs all over the globe including important music fests such as Coachella, Glastonbury, Sonar and Primavera Sound as well as Virgil Abloh’s Off-White fashion show.
By 2018 Peggy released 7 EPs for the record labels Ninja Tune and Phonica including Seek for Maktoop, Once and Moment.
2019 has been an important year for the Korean artist: Forbes named her as one of the Asian leaders, pioneers, and entrepreneurs under age 30; in February she launched her own fashion label KIRIN (“giraffe” in Korean); the following month, she announced the launch of her own independent record label, Gudu Records (gudu means “shoes” in Korean) and in June released DJ-Kicks: Peggy Gou for Berlin-based label !K7 becoming her first Billboard chart appearance, reaching 9th in Dance/Electronic Album Sales.
