Paul Hindemith (1895-1963) exhibited musical talent from an early age. After his early career was interrupted by his service in World War I, he started to gain fame as a composer after the premiere of some works in Salzburg in 1922. He had a complicated relationship with the Nazi government, falling in and out of favor with them until emigrating to Switzerland in 1938, possibly with the Nazis' support. He settled in America, where he became much esteemed as a teacher.
