Paul Dukas (1865-1935) was a shy, retiring man who retained the admiration of both the conservative and progressive factions of French music in his time. He is best known for his symphonic poem The Sorcerer’s Apprentice because of its use in the 1940 film Fantasia. Intensely self-critical, he destroyed many of his other works before they were published.
