New York-based female duo comprised of Hana Elion and JJ Mitchell, Overcoats’ describe their music as drawing strength from vulnerability, finding light through darkness, and being the catharsis of simple, honest songwriting. Their palette is stealth and simple electronics, with traces of folk, pop, and bluegrass embedded within.
Elion and Mitcher first met in 2011 while students at Wesleyan University, Connecticut. Instantly drawn to each other, connecting through their love of music, they bonded into a deep friendship close to sisterhood, producing a unique chemistry of vocal harmonies. In a 2017 interview they explained:
A lot of our songs are about relationships and a lot of our songs are about our mothers and fathers. That inherently leads to songs about gender and gender roles. So even though the songs are about love or loss, they are kind of infused with our thoughts about things that are bigger.
After some online attention generated by their 2015 self-titled EP, they had a breakout performance at the 2016 SXSW festival.
Their debut album YOUNG was released in April 2017 and speaks about transformation: about the passage into womanhood.
