Though Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936) wrote many operas, ballets, and chamber works, he is easily best known for his orchestral tone poems. The prolific Italian composer had subsidiary careers as a musicologist and academic, and though he does not enjoy the same reputation as other orchestral composers of his time, he is widely admired for his immense skill at orchestration.
