A leading English composer of his day, Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625) was baptized on Christmas Day and was the son of a strolling musician. A Cambridge graduate with a music degree, he composed vocal music, madrigals, and music for both keyboard and stringed instruments. He was appointed by King James to play the organ at Chapel Royal. He died suddenly of apoplexy at the age of 41.
