Noah is an Indonesian pop rock band from Bandung, Indonesia. It was formed in 2012 as a continuation of the multi-platinum group Peterpan by the remaining founding members of that band – vocalist Nazril “Ariel” Irham, rhythm guitarist Uki Kautsar, lead guitarist Lukman Hakim and drummer Ilsyah Ryan Reza – plus keyboardist David Albert, who had recorded and performed with Peterpan since 2007. As of August 2019, only Ariel, Lukman and David remain members of Noah.
After parting ways with fellow band founders Andika Naliputra and Hendra Suhendra, the remaining members of Peterpan recorded and released their third album Hari yang Cerah… in 2007 before reaching an agreement with their former band mates that they would cease using the name Peterpan. After releasing the double album compilation Sebuah Nama, Sebuah Cerita in 2008, the band announced that they would stop performing as Peterpan in October 2009 and continue with a new name.
The recording process for the band’s next album and the unveiling of their new name had to be delayed due to Ariel’s alleged involvement in racy videos that were leaked in 2010, which were deemed in violation of anti-pornography laws and led to his imprisonment. While their lead singer was incarcerated, the other members of the band played several shows with a number of guest vocalists. In early 2012, they released Suara Lainnya, a mostly-instrumental album of rearranged Peterpan songs. As they still wanted to keep the band’s new name under wraps, the album was credited to Ariel, Uki, Lukman, Reza, David as the artist.
A week after Ariel’s release from prison, the band officially announced their new name, Noah, on August 2, 2012, followed by the release of Seperti Seharusnya, their first album as Noah on September 16 which was marked by the stunt of playing in five countries over a 24-hour period. Besides the five core members of the band, the album also featured a trio of bass players, including Ihsan Nurrachman who was Peterpan’s touring bassist prior to their name change. He played bass on the majority of Seperti Seharusnya and even co-wrote two songs, including lead single “Separuh Aku”.
Ihsan performed with Noah until he left in 2013 and was replaced by Boy Tondo, who also played bass on Seperti Seharusnya. Boy would go on to add bass parts for all tracks on Second Chance, an album of re-recorded Peterpan songs that did not feature on their three proper studio albums, plus three all-new tracks including “Seperti Kemarin” which featured lyrics by Dewi Lestari. The launch of the album on New Year’s Eve 2015 also coincided with the departure announcement of Reza; up-and-coming session drummer Rio Alief was recruited in January 2015.
Boy remained as Noah’s live bassist until mid-2015, when he was replaced by Muhammad Dwi “Lanlan” Maulana, who had also played bass on Seperti Seharusnya songs. Lanlan and Rio would feature heavily on Noah’s next project, the 2016 all-covers album Sings Legends, which also included recorded contributions by their respective immediate predecessors, Boy and Reza.
After two albums of recycling old material, both of their own and by others, work on Noah’s proper second album of all-new material commenced in early 2017, including a week’s workshop on a ship off the Gili Trawangan shore. Two new singles, “My Situation” and “Jalani Mimpi”, were released simultaneously in September, while most of 2018 was spent trying to finish the album, particularly the lyrics.
Keterkaitan Keterikatan, the second Noah album of all-new material – and the fourth Noah album overall – was finally released in August 2019. The album also marked the end of Uki’s time in the band, from whose public activities he had been absent since the start of 2019 before officially announcing his departure upon the album’s release. His place as the rhythm guitarist for live shows is currently filled by Iwan Sukma, who was initially part of the band’s live production team and had previously acted as substitute guitarist in Uki’s absence.
On June 19 2020, Noah released their first recording as a trio, a cover version of the 1997 Chrisye hit “Kala Cinta Menggoda”. The band recorded their version of the song for Puspa Ragam Karya Guruh Sukarno Putra 2020, a compilation album in tribute to its composer, Guruh Sukarno Putra.
