Nina R.A.E. was born in Portugal and she is of Angolan descent. She graduated in theatre in 2015 and is currently studying music at the British Institute of Modern Music (BIMM) in London.
Nina R.A.E. identifies herself as a Neo-Soul singer whose music is a fusion of R&B with Hip Hop, Soul, and Trap elements.
She started developing her interest in music at church when she was very young, being Gospel the first main musical influence. At 10 she was officially a lead singer in the church choir and learned how to play the piano so with that there was naturally an urge to know and do more which ultimately intensified her passion and understanding for music. By then she was already taking her first steps in songwriting and composition. She decided it was time to take the music seriously.
When she began exploring other musical genres, she found a special appreciation for Rap/Hip-Hop music and it didn’t take long for her to play and record with some of the local groups and MC’s, giving here mostly studio practice and experience.
Reggae music was certainly crucial in her musical growth. Singing as backing vocal for several reggae bands was an opportunity to sing in big festivals which gave her the needed experience to perform in big stages.
Even so R&B and all its strands are definitely the main influence for her, it’s without a doubt the genre she can relate and identify herself in, both musical and lyrically. Being a 90’s lover she is inspired mainly by groups and artists such as Nina Simone, Destiny’s Child, Lauryn Hill and Aaliyah. Those would be her early influences, she is also influenced by Rihanna, Kehlani, SZA and Russ.
Nina is an ambitious and independent artist, songwriter, producer and musician who’s ready to share her talent and music to the world so it’s definitely an artist to keep an eye on.
