From Lo-fi hip-hop to psychedelic pop—and nearly everywhere in between—, solo producer, bedroom-recording artist and self-proclaimed ‘one-man band’ Nicolas Sales attempts to break the barriers between genres. Merging styles and creating new sounds, he draws inspiration from artists like Lil Peep, KAYTRANADA and Pink Floyd—artists that constantly challenged the status quo of the music industry.
Born in Mexico City, Nicolas Sales realized he wanted to make music at the age of 8, when his father introduced him to The Dark Side of the Moon. It wasn’t until age 16, however—when he moved to the USA—that he began acting upon his passion. He put together his own recording studio in the basement of a local venue, and along with fellow artist and close friend Lydia Rose Turino, wrote, recorded and independently produced his first full length collaborative album Everything, All at Once.
“Found in a random Bandcamp dive and immediately cherished, Nicolas Sales and Lydia Rose Turino’s one-shot duet album Everything, All at Once is delightful and diverse, with shades of everything from smooth Burt Bacharach vibes to dark and unsettling indiepop. Small Hands, originally recorded by reclusive alt-rock artist Keaton Henson, echoes the early days of the high-production post-grunge indie world; their hushed, indiefolk cover of Jackson Browne’s These Days evokes Elliott Smith, while beating out the other Nico’s cover for perfect Wes Anderson soundtrack placement sound.” (Joshua Farber for Cover Lay Down, 2016)
In October of 2017, he released Petrichor, a full length, lo-fi ‘beat tape,’ or instrumental hip-hop album, which he entirely produced while in a dorm room in Ytterjärna, Sweden.
On April 18th, 2018, Sales released Midnight Lo-Fi, the first of two twin lo-fi hip-hop tapes, with 8 laid back, dusty tracks. Longer Days, the sequel twin tape, released on June 15th.
Since then, several lo-fi hip-hop tapes have followed, including Sonder and Ok.
