Nicanor Abelardo (1893-1934) was a Filipino composer born to an artistic family in San Miguel de Mayumo. He entered the University of Philippines Conservatory of Music in 1916, and within eight years was the head of the composition department. He is best known for his songs, which strove to reconcile the traditional Filipino genre of kundiman (love songs in the Tagalog language) with Western art song.
