Turkish poet, novelist, writer and director Nâzım Hikmet (1902 – 1963) is known for his lyrical style and strong political legacy. A Communist, often at odds with the Turkish state, he was imprisoned more than once for his views and protests.
Aside from his own poetry, his work has inspired songs throughout the world, including the ‘60s folk song (usually) called I Come and Stand at Every Door. This has been recorded by artists such as The Byrds, Pete Seeger, Paul Robeson, The Fall and This Mortal Coil.
Hikmet was a recipient of the International Peace Prize in 1950, and the International Nazim Hikmet Poetry Award began in 1995 as a tribute to his legacy.
