Muzio Filippo Vincenzo Francesco Saverio Clementi (1752-1832) was born to a silversmith in Rome. His musical talent was recognized from an early age, and at 14, he was sponsored to study in England, where he would live the remainder of his life. Clementi was highly esteemed as a pianist and composer in his time, and his sonatas were highly regarded by Beethoven and Chopin. His activities as a music publisher and piano manufacturer also helped preserve the music composed by many of his contemporaries.
