About Mourning [A] BLKstar

Mourning [A] BLKstar is an American neo-soul/modern-gospel collective founded in 2016 in Cleveland, Ohio.

They describe themselves as “a multi-generational, gender and genre non-conforming amalgam of Black Culture dedicated to servicing the stories and songs of the apocalyptic diaspora.” Their music blends together soul, gospel, funk, blues, hip-hop, and avant-garde electronics, mixing live instrumentation with programmed sounds.

The group was formed in February 2016 by RA Washington after his close friend, Dwayne Pigee, (who was a musician, poet, and producer performing under multiple names, François Fissi-Bissi Okrakongo, Eck da Retarded Green Being, and GORK da banned Psychologist) was slain at the age of 41. The group formation was also inspired by the deaths of David Bowie (whose final album is titled Blackstar) and Prince, both occurred in 2016. Before Mourning [A] BLKstar, Washington and vocalist LaToya Kent had founded music collective Cleveland Tapes in 2001.
