Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov (1859-1935) was born as simply Mikhail Ivanov but added his mother’s maiden name to distinguish himself from a similarly named music critic. His first appointment was to a music academy and orchestra in Tbilisi, where he gained a lifelong love of the music of Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Persia, whose peoples were considered exotic subjects by Russians of the time.
