Michalina Malisz is a classically trained musician from the city of Jaworzno, Poland. She is best known as a member of folk metal band Eluveite. Malisz joined the band in 2016, first appearing on the album Evocation II: Pantheon.
Malisz is a world class player of the hurdy gurdy, a hand-cranked medieval string instrument. A hurdy gurdy is similar in operation to a violin, but uses tension from a mechanically turned wheel rather than a bow to create sound. Since first learning to play the instrument in approximately 2013 after hearing it played in Eluveite’s “Thousandfold” at a Children Of Bodom gig in 2011, Malisz now plays the hurdy gurdy as a full time member of the band.
In 2018, Malisz, alongside her husband Piotr, founded MM instruments, a company which produces custom made hurdy gurdys for sale to the public as well as professional musicians. The company operates out of an online store called Ancestore run by Malisz’s family which also sells other medieval instruments. Malisz personally runs the company’s social media, marketing and customer service.
Malisz also has a YouTube channel where she regularly posts informational videos about the hurdy gurdy as well as interviews and musical showcases.
