Sir Michael Tippett (1905-1998) was regularly ranked alongside Benjamin Britten as the best British composers of the latter half of the 20th century. While he was relatively late to reach maturity, he composed in a wide variety of styles influenced by jazz, African-American gospel, atonal, and electronic music. He was knighted by the British crown in 1966.
