About Michael Smith (Jamaican dub poet)

Michael “Mikey” Smith was a poet born in 1954 in Kingston, Jamaica. In the early 1980s Linton Kwesi Johnson became aware of his work, and along with Dennis Bovell, brought Smith into the studio to record a “dub poetry” album called, Mi Cyaan Believe It in 1982.

Mi Cyaan Believe It was Smith’s only album, as he was murdered in Jamaica in 1983 after heckling the Minister of Education at a political rally.

In 1989, City Lights books in San Francisco published, It A Come: Poems by Michael Smith.
