About Michael Hädrich

Michael Hädrich is the keyboardist and backing vocalist of the German new wave band FEX. Their song “Subways of Your Mind,” was the subject of a 17-year-long widespread online search to identify its title and artist, during which it was known as “The Most Mysterious Song on the Internet.” Following the band’s identification in November 2024, FEX reformed and began re-releasing their old demos from the 1980s. Hädrich began his music career with the band Phret in 1977. Phret was a finalist for NDR’s Hörfest competition in 1983, although their final outcome is unknown as of late. In 1982, Hädrich, along with Ture Rückwardt and Norbert Ziermann, formed Modulators, who released a 7” EP, Hygiene Hygiene Hygiene. A year later, the three formed FEX, alongside drummer Hans Sievers. In September 1984, FEX won the Newcomer Festival in Brember Glocke and began touring across northern Germany. Hädrich left the band in 1985, and FEX eventually disbanded in 1987, In November 2024, FEX reformed, performing “Subways Of Your Mind” live and unplugged on NDR 1 Welle Nord, marking the original lineup’s first performance together in nearly 40 years. FEX continues to release archival material, with an album Skyscraper set for release in July 2025. A re-recording of “Subways” is slated to release after the album.
