With a classically-trained pianist for a mother and eight siblings, Michael Damien Weir became the organ player/backing vocalist in his family’s progressive rock band. But when the other members realized the girls in the audience were screaming for him, they moved Damien up in front as lead vocalist. Soon afterwards, he pursued a solo career.
His first single “She Did It”, a cover of the Eric Carmen song, peaked at #69 in the US and got him an invitation to perform it on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand. This performance got him noticed and soon after he landed the role of rocker Danny Romalotti on the soap opera The Young And The Restless.
During his eighteen year stint on the show, Damian released four albums. The first two did not chart and had no charting singles, but his third album Where Do We Go From Here found success on the strength of its chart-topping lead single “Rock On” – a cover of David Essex’s 1974 hit that his brothers gave to the director of the Corey Haim/Corey Feldman film Dream A Little Dream. The album spawned two more top 40 hits “Was It Nothing At All” and “Cover Of Love”. His fourth album did not chart while its lead single “What A Price To Pay” was a minor US hit in 1991.
Damian then landed the leading role in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s production of Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in 1993. Two more albums followed during this time but went largely unnoticed. He married Janeen Best in 1998 and the two formed a film production company that began releasing movies, short films and more. In 2003, he began releasing albums again. His 2009 album Rock On consists of re-recordings of his earlier hits.
