Phemelo “Mellow” Sefanyetse and Olebogeng “Sleazy” Kwanaite known by Mellow & Sleazy is a South African producer duo from Soshanguve and Ga-Rankuwa, in Tshwane, respectively.
According to an interview with sowetanlive, Sleazy met Mellow in 2020 during their first year at university. Sleazy always had a passion for music production and prior to producing on amapiano, his primary focus was trap and hip-hop beats. The main spark for their collaboration came from their shared love for trap production, which lead to them deciding to establish a production group from their friend’s makeshift studio at the time. It would be in this studio that they would both hone their production skills and master their craft of blending Bacardi with elements of Amapiano. Having grown up listening to Bacardi, the sound most popular and associated with the Tshwane townships in Pretoria, it played a great deal in influencing their sound.
They first burst onto the scene in 2021 with the platinum-selling single “Bopha” with Felo Le Tee, DJ Maphorisa and Young Stunna. The single gained massive attention due to capturing the experience the people of South Africa in desire for liberty during the strict lockdown days of the pandemic.
