Chilean Native, Meekasia, makes blending Trap, Rap, Dembow and R&B look easy. Her formative years were spent amongst a variety of sounds; she’d spend weekends with her father listening to songs like “Miénteme una Vez” by Los Vasquez and “Arriba en la Cordillera” by Patricio Manns. At the same time, familiarized herself with pop-contemporary artists like Paramore, Bruno Mars and Demi Lovato.
Her life changed at 13, when she moved with her mother to the United States, where Meekasia was bullied for her Chilean accent. She thought of music as her teacher; turned to music as a means for perfecting her English and familiarity with American Slang. Meekasia learned and recited songs like “Blessings” by Big Sean feat. Drake & Kanye West regularly. She found solace in the new-to-her sounds of Reggaeton, Rap R&B and Trap.
In April 2019, Meekasia released her first freestyle on Instagram and was met with viral success. She continued to share freestyles, finding instrumentals on YouTube and incorporating new sounds she was discovering in America.
Her sometimes gritty, sometimes smooth style delivered in Spanish, captivated her Latin listeners. Meekasia’s first original recording, “Brand New,” was released January 10, 2020; it’s a blend of American Rap/R&B, with her signature Chilean twist. Meekasia’s forging a new path for Chilean Music. Her determination to see it through will undoubtedly be her reason for success.
