To call the Meat Puppets groundbreaking, seminal, or a mess fails to meet reality: most of the 90s have the brothers Kirkwood and Derrick Bostrom to thank for their music. Operating out of an Arizona garage, the band fused punk, rockabilly, and acid rock into a haze of off-time guitar riffs, deep lyrics, and few mainstream hits. The band scored constant airplay for Too High to Die’s “Backwater” and eventually featured on Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged album.
