Hailing from Brownsville, Texas, Grupo Mazz began making music in 1978 with Jose Lopez at lead vocals, and support from good friend Jimmy Gonzalez, songwriter Luis Silva, and other various musicians. They are consider pioneers of the Tejano (regional Mexican) music genre (alongside Selena, La Mafia, and Gary Hobbs). The band’s success didn’t begin to blossom until the mid to late 1980’s with hits like “Laura Ya No Vive Aqui” and “Otra Vez” and into the 1990’s in which the band won multiple Tejano Music Awards. The band was crucial in the success of the genre in what is considered the “Golden Age” of the genre with their synthetic twist to the basic Tejano theme.
