Maverick City Music is a worship collective that was founded in 2018 by Tony Brown, of Housefires, and Jonathan Jay. Their music is birthed from Maverick City Music Writing Camps, which gather Christian artists and songwriters to create worship songs that break the rules of CCM and Gospel, and blend the sounds of artists who would not normally collaborate.
Chandler Moore, a frequent soloist for Maverick City Music, touches on this in an interview with Relevant in May 2020:
And the reason I love Maverick is because, the way I call it, it’s so unmanicured. You don’t know what to do with it. You can’t put it in a box. It is what it is. I think what it’s doing is challenging those lines. Like, hey, just because a black guy is leading a CCM song. What do we do?
Maverick City Music has released eight albums: Maverick City Vol. 1 and Maverick City Vol. 2 in 2019; Maverick City Vol. 3 – Part 1, Maverick City Vol. 3 – Part 2, Maverick City Christmas in 2020; and Jubilee, Jubilee: The Juneteenth Edition, and A Very Maverick Christmas in 2021.
2021 also saw the collective collaborate with UPPERROOM on two albums—You Hold It All Together and Move Your Heart—as well as Elevation Worship on Old Church Basement.
