About Maudlin Of The Well

maudlin Of The Well is a metal ensemble that formed in Boston, MA in the late ‘90s and released four studio albums between 1999-2009. Much of their music was written and produced by composer and multi-instrumentalist Toby Driver, also leader of avant-garde metal band Kayo Dot.

Stylistically, maudlin are often categorized as progressive or avant-garde metal. Their first three albums consisted of heavy metal instrumentation augmented with various chamber instruments, synthesizers, and the distinct vocal contributions of Driver, Maria-Stella Fountoulakis, and Jason Byron. Their latest album, Part the Second (2009), takes on a slightly less heavy art rock style, placing more emphasis on strings. Much of Driver’s lyrics are inspired by literature and mythology.
