Matthew Bathon Jr., better known as Matty Beats, is a hip-hop producer. He is known for short and high energy beat-making videos on Instagram and TikTok. Matty is also known for being a custom beats producer and audio engineer, readily connecting with artists to provide high-quality songs with his mixing and mastering and his custom-made beats.

Matty’s first musical awakening was when his uncle gifted him an old Charvel guitar for his 13th birthday. Matty started playing the guitar and was a huge fan of classic rock, and he admitted to hating hip hop. It wasn’t until high school he gained a love for hip-hop when he was recruited by his friend Michael Joon to play guitar in a live hip hop band with his buddies. The band didn’t receive much recognition but was able to score opportunities to open up for artists like Mac Miller and Joey Bada$$.

Matty started exploring beat-making and rapping in 2010, uploading beat demos under the name Matty B to a YouTube channel. In 2012, Matty graduated from Boston’s Commonwealth School and started attending Boston College because of fencing prospects. Some of his floormates in his dorm would freestyle over beats Matty would cook up, and together they called themselves “The Second Floor Squad.” During this time, he got the nickname “Beats” and mashed it together with his childhood nickname of Matty to create his stage name.

Working with serious rappers like his floormate Sc Static, Matty started taking producing more seriously and decided he needed an upgrade from the demo version of FL Studio. At Guitar Center, he was convinced to buy ProTools, and he slowly figured out how ProTools worked and steadily increased his producing skills. Matty attended music theory classes offered by his college, which increased his keyboard and piano skills and strengthened his understanding of music.

After graduating from college in 2016, his Matty Beats brand was steadily increasing. He enrolled in an online music production course by Cosmic Academy, which he also cites as a big help to his production skills. In 2018, Matty found his old camera from his skateboarding days and began creating music producing videos that he posted on YouTube and Instagram. In 2019, Matty branched out to TikTok and started being more comfortable in front of a camera. Since then, Matty has become recognizable for his goofy personality and the weird faces he makes when the beat drops in his videos. In 2020, Matty left his longtime base city of Philadelphia to room with musical duo ITS OK in Nashville, and in 2021, Matty moved to Florida with his manager. In June 2021, Matty fulfilled his lifelong dream by moving to Los Angeles to create music.
