About Matt Johnson

Matt Johnson (1961- ) is best known for being the frontman and only consistent member of The The.

Johnson was born and raised in London, growing up in a flat above his father’s pub, the infamous The Two Puddings. As a young boy, he was exposed to artists like Howlin' Wolf and The Kinks through concerts at his uncle’s nightclub.

He formed his first band at 11. At age 15, he quit school and got hired as an errand boy for a music publishing company. By 18, he was the assistant recording engineer at their studio. In 1978, Johnson put out an ad in the NME seeking musicians interested in The Velvet Underground, Syd Barrett, Throbbing Gristle and The Residents. Synthesizer player Keith Laws answered the ad and, in 1981, they began performing as The The.

Since The The’s effective hibernation in 2002, Johnson has kept busy composing film scores for his Cineola company, forming a publishing company to print his father’s pub memoirs and acting as a spokesman for local urban conservationism efforts in Shoreditch.
