Mark Stewart (born in Bristol, England on April 28th, 1960; died April 21st, 2023) was a British musician and most notably the founding member of legendary post-punk band The Pop Group, providing lead vocals. He was also a vocalist in New Age Steppers. Stewart’s lyrics within these bands (particularly The Pop Group), and also within his solo music, were often expressly politically charged, usually of anti-fascist and anti-imperialist sentiment. He is often cited as a pioneer of post-punk, evolving the sound by incorporating elements of free jazz, dub, noise rock, and industrial hip-hop.
