Lead singer and songwriter with GANGgajang and The Riptides, Mark was born in the UK and moved to Australia with his family in the 1970’s. After completing high school in Bundaberg, he studied Architecture at Queensland University where he and fellow architecture students formed their first band – the now legendary Riptides.
Moving from Brisbane to Sydney in 1980, The Riptides became one of the leading live acts in the country but never managed to convert their raucous live energy into mainstream success. The Riptides disbanded as a full-time unit in 1983, leaving behind them the studio album Tombs Of Gold, the live set Resurface and a cult status that continues to this day.
Following The Riptides, Mark formed GANGgajang with Graham ‘Buzz’ Bidstrup and Chris Bailey from The Angels. GANGgajang’s debut album sold over 250,000 copies and featured the Callaghan penned classic hits Sounds of Then (This Is Australia), Gimmie Some Lovin’, House Of Cards and The Bigger They Are. GANGgajang continues to release albums and tour to this day.
Mark has also released solo material and written music for TV shows, plays and movies.
