The puerto rican María Reál (a.k.a María or María Zardoya), who was raised in Atlanta, is the lead singer of the band The Marías.
Her dreamy vocals are just like the band’s music, adding a silk touch to the “jazz percussion, guitar riffs and horn solos”.
The singer said shess inspired by Selena (the Tejano singer), Norah Jones, Sade, Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Carla Morrison, Julieta Venegas, Erykah Badu, and the filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar.
After meeting Josh Conway, when María was performing and he watched her, María and him started writing songs right away. Joined by friends, they started the band The Marías, releasing their first EP in 2017: Superclean Vol. I.
