A native of Chicago, Margaret Bonds (1913-1972) managed to earn both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in music from Northwestern in two years. She moved to New York, where she was active both as a composer and a pianist. Many of her musical collaborations were with Langston Hughes, either setting his poetry or working with him in his theatrical endeavors.
