Tokelo Moyakhe (born August the 3rd, 1993) is a South African rapper and songwriter. Born in a small town in the Freestate called Reitz and raised in a Klerksdorp township called Kanana,in the North West province, he embarked on his musical career at a young age under the stage name “M.D.B” ( Maglera Doe Boy). Releasing an EP titled “Progression” in 2015 that garnered national attention and led to him being recognized on Hype Magazine’s Top 5 underrated Mixtapes and EP’s. He began to gain recognition on a bigger scale after, working on songs featuring acts like Slikour, Towdeemac, Ginger Trill, Cassper Nyovest, Khuli Chana and more recently, pH Raw X & Reason and HHP, he was also nominated for Hype Magazines 2017 Freshmen list.
M.D.B has kept his musical career in his hometown for 14 years, getting his style from the rappers he grew up listening to that originate from Klerksdorp. His vernacular style of rap is influenced by Motswako and West Coast Gangster rap, which led to the birth of his style which was dubbed “STRAATA” by a rapper who does the same style who goes by the name of Apu Sebekedi. His influences nationally were kwaito artists like Brickz, Mapaputsi, MaOrange, Gumshev, Zola, Mageu amongst a few.
He started recording music in professional studios at a very young age, working with Afro Pop legends The Jaziel Brothers' Luthando & Ntobeko Ncgizela, who were also recording Jub-Jub’s album at that time. He continued making music on his own with the producers he grew up around and over the years formed a good following at home and used that as a jump to launch him to Joburg, where he has since made alliances with the originators of Motswako like Morafe. M.D.B pays a lot of homage to that style of music too as it comes from the province he was raised in, which inspired him to open his creative collective “ONDE” ( One Nine Dubel Exx) and independent label ONDE Live, which houses his peers that he started his musical journey with and met on the way.
He is currently set to release his second offering, a joint project with ‘Arcade’ in-house producer ‘Subs’ titled 2Player . This project is a representation of his “STRAATA” style mastered with new sounds he incorporated because of the uniqueness of his voice and cultural exposure he experienced at home that has given him a mix of slang, from Tsotsi Taal and a mixture of the dominant languages amongst the surrounding communities in South Africa. The project is set for release 2020 under Khuli Chana’s ‘Mythrone’ and M.D.B’s label ‘ONDE Live’.
