It’s redundant asking what kind of music MACTurnUp makes. Just read at his moniker: MAC’s here to bring the turn up. And that’s literally how the melodic East Atlanta rapper earned his name.
At venues and clubs, greetings of “Mac, turn up!” would rain down from all directions, becoming so overwhelming and ubiquitous to the point of annoyance. MAC took the call to action in stride, however, and became MACTurnUp.
Performing as a hypeman over the past decade alongside DJ Mayhem during cross-country shows, MAC simply turned up harder than anyone else onstage. The kid from Stone Mountain, Georgia simply became addicted to the thrill of a roaring crowd. He savored every bolt of electricity radiating from unhinged fans. Tapping into his innate ability to read fans, feel out the music, and whip crowds into a buzzing nest of energy.
At 25, MACTurnUp began parlaying his connections in Atlanta and knowledge of the city’s hip-hop industrial system into a real career as an artist. DJ Mayhem brought began producing more and more for MACTurnUp. In 2014, in his maiden attempt to find his sound and voice, he released his first project MAClanta. A mixture of house-shaking trap jams and songs built around DJ drops, MACTurnUp’s energy, intensity, and vocoded flow on the mic rode the production like he’d read a crowd: with precision and passion.
