About Machine Girl

Machine Girl is a digital hardcore duo, fusing elements of punk, hardcore, industrial, breaks, and electronic music. The duo is comprised of vocalist and producer Matthew Stephenson (pictured above) and drummer Sean Kelly. Stephenson often performs in drag with their KISS-inspired face-paint.

Their music is characterized by a heavy cyberpunk influence. Other influences include anime, 90’s nostalgia, and the Japanese film of the same name. While a direct connection has never been confirmed, audio clips from the film’s English dub have been sampled and the movie referenced. Another movie that is sampled is Ginger Snaps, a cult-classic werewolf flick. Werewolves and dogs are a recurring lyrical and aesthetic theme as well, being used to describe aggression and being wild.

Their debut album, WLFGRL, gained attention by media sources and garnered them a small following, eventually leading to their next record GEMINI. They eventually released their 3rd album, BECAUSE I’M YOUNG ARROGANT AND HATE EVERYTHING YOU STAND FOR, which saw them going in a more digital hardcore direction, and subsequently their future sound contains elements of more experimental fusions of rock and electronics.
