Ellen Joyce Loo was born in Toronto Canada on March 27, 1986, but would eventually emigrate to Hong Kong with her family at the age of four.
At the age of 15, Loo was noticed by Hong Kong music industry veteran Anthony Wong Yiu Ming and made her debut alongside Eman Lam in 2001 as a part of the duo at17.
Nine years later, Loo ventured into a solo career in Taiwan, winning “Best musical arrangement in vocals” at the 28th Golden Melody Music Awards. It was here where she officially came out as a lesbian during her acceptance speech and thanking wife Fisher Yu Jing Ping. In the same speech, she also announced that music had saved her life, as she suffered from bipolar disorder and was extremely open about it. Music was a major deciding factor as to why she pursued music as a professional career.
Loo was an advocate for LGBTQ+ as well as mental health issues in Taiwan and Hong Kong.
In August of 2018, Loo mysteriously fell out of her apartment building in Hong Kong and passed away at the age of 32. Her death was deemed an accident by local police, citing that there was no foul play involved. She is survived by her loving wife.
