Lotte Lenya (1898-1983) met her husband Kurt Weill when auditioning for his first stage show. She originated the role of Jenny in his The Threepenny Opera. After Hitler took power, Lenya fled Germany and reunited with Weill, and both settled in New York. She was nominated for an Oscar for The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone and won a Tony for portraying Jenny in the English-language version of The Threepenny Opera. She also played the villainous Rosa Klebb in From Russia With Love.
