Born in 1919, Lillian “Lil” Green was a Chicago blues artist known for her 1940 hit “Romance in the Dark” and her 1941 version of Kansas Joe McCoy’s “Why Don’t You Do Right?”. Her distinct vocal style, impeccable timing and songwriting talent led to her notoriety as both a performer and artist. She achieved success during the golden age of the blues by touring clubs as a rhythm and blues band vocalist and recording for major R&B labels like RCA and Atlantic. She passed away from pneumonia at the age of thirty-five.
