Mark Lavon “Levon” Helm (May 26, 1940 – April 19, 2012) is best remembered as the drummer and sometimes-vocalist for The Band. The Arkansas native contributed a soulful, country-accented influence to the otherwise Canadian group, and sang on some of their most memorable hits, including “The Weight” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”.
