British-Egyptian rapper L Jinny, also known as Lyricist Jinn or by his real name, Abdel-Majed Abdel Bary, released a number of recordings about his own predicaments as a youth in London. Bary achieved a moderate level of success as a rapper, being played on BBC Radio in 2012 and appearing in an episode of SBTV Warmup Sessions. In addition to frequent collaborations with fellow London-based rapper Tabanacle, he was also part of a rap group known as “The Black Triangle.” As his rap career progressed, however, Bary courted an even more grim and violent scene than rap: in later songs, references to the use of cannabis and other drugs stopped and were replaced by more radical tirades against people who chose to spend their money “frivolously;” on clubbing, drinking, and drugs, rather than feeding their families.
Bary’s lyrical content often referenced his turbulent familial situation, in his own words, claiming that he was responsible for “six siblings and a mum to feed;” his father is Adel Abdel Bary, a militant believed to be connected to Osama bin Laden who was sentenced to twenty-five years in prison for his role in the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania.
In April 2020, Bary was arrested at a rented flat in a seaside town in Spain, not seven years after he had abandoned his rap career for a life of jihad.
