About Khruangbin

Khruangbin is a multi-genre trio based out of Houston, Texas, and originally from Burton, Texas. The line-up consists of Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald “DJ” Johnson Jr. on drums and occasional keyboards. Their name means “airplane” in Thai (เครื่องบิน) and is an homage to one their main musical influences: ‘60s and '70s Thai rock. Their sound also borrows elements from psychedelia, surf rock, funk, soundtracks, dub, and pieces of Zouk, Indian, and Middle Eastern music.

The band was formed just after Speer and Lee performed live with electronic rock musician Yppah, who was supporting Bonobo across his 2010 American tour. The two decided to write music together and recruited drummer DJ, who had played with Mark in a gospel band for years.

While on stage, Speer and Lee wear wigs that helped them not to be recognized when they first started the band. Now part of their signature look, the wigs still help them to get from the stage to the merch stand without being noticed.
